Pitching Safety

According to American Baseball Foundation board president and renowned orthopedic surgeon, James R. Andrews, "The best pitchers in the country never make it to the majors because they're the ones in the youth leagues who are overused. We're seeing more injuries now because these kids are having more pressure to throw at higher velocities. They're throwing more sliders, more stress pitches. But the crux of the problem is we don't have enough quality pitchers to go around (in the majors) because the good quality pitchers are being hurt in the youth leagues."

Your individual judgment, research, and training should determine the proper arm care for your players. This information is being provided for parents and coaches who are unaware of proper pitcher training development. Each year we see more and more coaches who are putting their pitchers at risk just for the win. We urge all coaches to "count pitches" with in this guideline, and encourage all parents of pitchers to become part of their players development. Extensive pitching injuries are something we do not want to see happen.
